TODD
PEERMAN-HEDGES, HIV/AIDS ACTIVIST, DIES KEY WEST
— On Saturday, February 22, 2003, Key West lost one of its
most beloved HIV/AIDS advocates. Todd J. Peerman-Hedges passed
away peacefully at his home in Key West, but leaves behind a
proud legacy of achievements in our community. He is survived
by his lifetime partner, Kelly Hedges-Peerman.
Peerman-Hedges
moved to Key West in 1993 and took up the cause of empowering
and educating all within the community who are affected by and
infected with HIV/AIDS.
In remembering
Todd, Cindy Francisco of the Monroe County Health Department
said, “He had a knack and ability to work with client
services. He was constantly challenging the system to make
sure that the clients’ needs were met.“
Todd was well
known at both the local and state level for his tireless
pursuits for HIV/AIDS rights. He was instrumental in his
efforts to get allocation of funds set aside for all HIV
clients in the lower Florida Keys.
“I have great
respect for him,” Francisco continued. “His sharp wit,
selflessness and overriding concern for others were primary
traits. Even in the end he worked to help better people with
HIV. He is one of the finest people I have ever
met.”
Todd was a board
member of AIDS Help, Inc. He worked as the client liaison and
attended every meeting until recently when his health would no
longer permit.
A celebration of
life and memorial service was held Saturday, March 1, at the
Metropolitan Community Church. Memorial donations may be made
to AIDS Help, Inc. or to Hospice Visiting Nurses Association
of the Keys.
WORK
ON SEA-TO-SEA FLAG BEGINS KEY WEST
— Gilbert Baker, the artist who designed the original
rainbow flag, was in Key West last week working with the
PrideFest Committee to finalize details for the construction
of the record-breaking sea-to-sea flag. The giant flag will
stretch 1.25 miles from the Gulf of Mexico to the Atlantic
Ocean on June 15 this year.
Baker has been
working directly with SPI Marketing of New York to fund the
massive undertaking. At this point two major national sponsors
have been identified and a third is being sought. Currently
Baker is in New York finalizing the details of the contract.
Baker spent part of last week in Fort Lauderdale with local
flag coordinator Frank Garner purchasing the industrial sewing
machines and the fabric needed for the project.
Enthusiasm for the
project is growing. PrideFest co-chair Heather Carruthers
reports that already over 20 people have volunteered to help
sew and fold the flag. However, volunteers are still needed
for other aspects of this year’s PrideFest.
Finding someone to
help coordinate volunteer efforts is currently a major need.
